How to Handle a Claim during the Long Holiday Weekend

When work ends for the holiday weekend and we bolt out the door, we all hope that our plans for the celebration of the holiday will go as planned.   Regretfully, that isn’t always the case.  For some, it doesn’t take long for plans to head south… fast. When heading into a holiday weekend, the last thing we want to worry about is how to handle a string of bad luck.

What happens when you need to file a claim after your agency has closed?

The first thing to remember is that you do have the option to contact the insuring company and file a claim with them directly.  Many companies have 1-800 numbers that work regardless of the time or day of the week.  Some companies are also giving clients the option of filing a claim online through their website.  Additionally, a number of companies are also allowing clients to make claims from their smart devices (phones, tablets, etc.) through free company mobile applications. You also have the option (depending on the damage, situation and time allowed) to wait it out and speak with your agent when they are back in the office.

The best plan of action is to see if your company has a mobile app for your smart phone before you leave on your trip for safe measure. In fact, some of those applications will allow you to take and submit photos of the damage and upload documentation to support the claim such as appraisals, receipts or other documentation that may be needed.

If your insurance company does not have a mobile application, make sure you have their 1-800 number handy.  It is also a good idea to make sure you have their number in multiple places (in your wallet/purse, in your glove box, etc.) for backup.

Taking these simple steps can make filing your claim easier should you encounter a bump (or bang) in the road this holiday weekend!
